CATALINA L. TOMA

Picture

I am an Associate Professor of Communication Science in the Department of Communication Arts and I lead  the Social Media Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

I obtained my MS and PhD from the Department of Communication at Cornell University.

My research is concerned with how people understand and relate to one another when interacting via new communication technologies (e.g., online dating, social network sites, texting). I examine how relational processes such as self-presentation, impression formation, deception, trust, and emotional well-being are shaped by the affordances and limitations of computer-mediated environments.

I teach courses in interpersonal communication, computer-mediated communication, and online relationships.
